Travel Diaries // The Sydney Opera House

SydneyOperaHouse1

Although almost a full month has passed since we returned from our trip, the memories of our first visit to Australia and New Zealand are still fresh in our minds. Since returning, it feels like we have been deprived of sunshine and warmth. When I go to work, it's almost always rainy and dark; when I leave work, it's usually the same situation. As a result, I'm not sure when I was last experienced any sustained periods of daylight or sunshine...

To remind myself that summer still exists somewhere, I've found myself browsing through the photos of our first day in Sydney. On this gorgeous day, we found ourselves wandering through the Royal Botanic Gardens until we were on the right path towards our true destination: the world-famous Sydney Opera House. This distinctive building was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and formally opened in 1973. The Opera House is actually a multi-venue performing arts centre and hosts over 1,500 performances annually. As well, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007-- which goes to show just how important this building has become to both Australia and the wider world.

While I know that it's merely a building, it was a slightly surreal experience to finally being visiting such a famous place in person! Also, the weather was fully cooperating and I was able to take many photos of its structural beauty in the warm sunshine.

We got a glimpse of the inside when we went in to use the washrooms; it looked just as beautiful on the inside as it did on the exterior. If we had more fully planned things out, we might even have gone to see a show at the Opera House; however, we decided that we would fill our evening with less pricey activities.

After getting our fill of photos of the Opera House's beautiful architecture, we finally headed over to our next destination: The Sydney Fish Market (post coming soon).

Have you ever visited or seen a performance at the Sydney Opera House? If so, how did you like it?

Cheers,
